Learn to compose a dramatic still life using a shadow box. Then, paint it Alla Prima ( from life ) with a classical look. This two day work-shop will focus on composition, color harmony, planes and reflection of light and manipulating paint to capture light and color. Personal attention will be paid since the group is limited to 8 members. Workshop includes an artist demonstration. Students are welcome to bring objects of interest to paint. Upon registration a list of materials will be provided.

"Glide" Exhibit at National Soaring Museum

Harris Hill, Elmira,

from January 28 - February 18.

An opening reception will be held this Saturday, January 28, from 2 - 4pm (snow date February 4). The reception is free and open to the public.

I used to glide on Sedburgh T23's (open cockpit) when I was growing up in India. I can still close my eyes and hear the sounds of the wind, feel the breeze on my face and hair while I soared among birds, with mountains below and the sun setting. I felt free and one with nature. No boundaries, no restrictions. Below is my interpretation of how I felt.

Still life with lotuses 18 x 24 oil on linen

Lotuses are one of my favorite flowers. Besides looking divine while growing in murky and muddy waters, they have a composite petal coloring that is not easy to capture. The petals can go from bright pink corners to white where light hits it. I thought it would be fun to capture these varied petal shapes and colors. I ordered these lotuses from india and they arrived as buds. It was fun opening the petals.
Knowing how quickly they wilt, I set up the entire composition before pulling the flowers out of the fridge. I decided to keep the background very dark and not play with it as i have been doing in my recent paintings. Did a study and then painted the larger18 x 24 later. After I did this study , while travelling, I found yellow lliles growing in a lakeside pond in pennsylvania. Only problem was it is impossible to pick these flowers unless you are willing to get neck deep into murky waters.

September is a terrific month for dinner plate dahlias. I set this still life with an almost life size white ceramic sculpture of Buddha. The morning sun cast a good play of light shadow. I choose to arrange the flowers in a chaotic manner to represent the beauty in our chaos of a world. Buddha is in a state of complete bliss or nirvana in this environment. This time I played a lot with the background and painted the flowers thickly

Crabapple blossoms are delicate and graceful. A carved wooden panel from India with stories from Indian mythology provided a perfect sturdy background to paint the delicate flowers.

Ganesh and Mountain Laurels 9 x 12

In the last week of may I took a workshop with Sherrie Mcgraw in CT. The pink mountain laurels that I saw there caught my fancy. These were deep magenta flowers that opened to a light pink and when the light hit them were a beautiful white. I brought a bunch home to paint. This gave me a chance to set up a color combination I had been contemplating for a while, pink and grey. A little clay ganesh I had was perfect for the setup.

In April this year I went to colonial beach to do a workshop with Rob Liberace. Spring was in the air and colonial beach being 10* warmer than horseheads the forsythia was in full bloom. I brought a couple of bunches home and while loading my car, I admired how beautiful they looked against my red suitcase. So there, my flowers had selected their own background :-). The top middle bunch is what i decided to paint.

Mums and Ganesh

It's been a while since I have posted so i have been asked if I am painting infrequently. On the contrary, I am painting with more discipline now. :-) . Just doing larger and more complex compositions. Here is my latest. Ganesh, the elephant headed god with big mums. I love spider and football mums. They are elegant and graceful. The many petals seemed to challenge me to paint. I also love this ganesha that is of tibetan origin. This idol is made of pancha loha or 5 metals (gold, silver, copper, brass and iron/lead. ). The flowers seemed like a nice match with ganesha and I set up this composition. The colors of the idol change in different light and this was a challenge, that I never anticipated before. Didn't want to risk moving the position of my flowers by moving this to a shadow box, lesson learned :-)! I had to stick to painting the idol on cloudy days. After my initial sketches of the composition to determine values and my quick sketch on a 8 x 10.

I started the painting on a 20 x 24 linen canvas. I painted the mums first which have a limited shelflife

and then moved on to completing the entire painting at a more convenient time. Enjoy!

Aanya, my 5 month old niece, the first portrait drawing of this year. As I was making chuckling sounds and peek a boos and getting her to pose for me, Aanya went from wide eyed, pouty mouthed, frowned awe to line eyed, toothless chuckles which lasted a glimpse. Alas, her awe was what I could capture not her bright smile .

Precious Moments

Growing up I had to choose between flying and horseback riding and I chose flying. However, I love horses and always wish I could ride them. I have pictures of horses from local barns I visit, taken with the intention of painting them. However, my desire for painting from life overcomes my intent to paint and I keep postponing. So, when a friend approached me to commission a portrait of her horse, Precious, I gladly agreed. I drove to her farm, studied Precious, did a couple of drawings, took notes on the color and photographs. What ensued was a beautiful journey for me on understanding horses. Oh and there's a bonus!

I also get to ride Precious on the first warm day in April! Yuhooooo!!

Artwork Inspired by me

I received an email from Jennifer Vaughn and Tina of artwork inspired by my painting the zebra finches at the kindergarten/preschool class at Chemung Valley Montessori school. Aren't they adorable? These kids are less than 6 years old. :-)

Painting from Observation (Zebra Finch 5 x 7)

On tuesday I decided to paint from observation. Take a quick look at an object and then recollect what I saw and paint it without looking at it again. The objective was to improve my observation skills. I decided I would paint caged zebra finches at the Chemung Valley Montessori school. I requested preschool teachers Jennifer and Maria to do this after their school hours and instead got invited to paint in class. Since the audience of 3 to 6 yr olds seemed forgiving I agreed.

I set up and started to draw. Boy, was that a mistake. Those finches did not even pose for 1 complete second for me. They moved and never seemed to settle back in the same pose. The prettiest of the two was even more audacious. Just refused to keep the same pose :-(

Now not only was I challenging myself I actually risked being a complete idiot in front of 20 young kids. I finally overcame my nerves , mustered enough courage, focused on my observation and here's the result.

Needless to say my audience was spellbound :-) LOL . "You are a really good artist to paint like that" said a little kid. "I want to be an artist" said another. I got loads of thank yous and hugs. "I should paint more in front of young children", I was making a mental note to my new inspired self as I returned to the stilllife waiting for me at home.

This ia the piece selected for exhibiting at the show "A tribute to Tom Buechner" on oct 12th at West End Gallery. This figure with folded hands welcomes guests to my house. I love watching the cool north light highlighting the dark figure. I set this still life with my clematis and highlighted the welcoming hands with warm candlelight while the cool north light hit the face.

Cars and Van Gogh

There are few modern structures I like to paint and cars with lights are one of them. I shot this picture while driving in colorado (yeap in my rearview mirror). There was somehting about the atmosphere of the mountains and the cars that was very intriguing (nature and mans creation went hand in hand here)I had freshly come from scott Christensen's workshop and painted enough sunsets as my evening plein air exercise where I tried to capture the light in 15 mins. After the 10th day things seemed good. Then came a request to paint a painting for the auction for a Parent Resource center using Van Gogh's starry night as an inspiration. Did a couple of studies and here is the final picture. That was the best picture I could take with the blues and reds washed out

Worshop with Mr Vasudeo Kamath

Arranged a workshop with Mr Kamath. He started with a demo, interrupting it frequently to answer every little and I mean every little, question we had and to do quick drawings on how to handle eyes and so on.

We started painting the model and he later proceeded to correct our drawings and paint his suggestions on our paintings. It was the most intense and educative workshop I had ever taken.

He then topped it off with a very interesting talk in the evening. I have attached a couple of his subjective paintings that I love. The little boy looking up at the elephant and thinking how fun it would be to ride it, as he is riding a toy elephant is little chanakya , the author of arthasastra or a treatise on the art of war.

I also love the little kid trying to catch the moon and stars.

"Face Off" from PSOA Conference 2010

Went to attend the forum at the Portrait Society of America conference in DC on "Contemporary Art: Realist Revolution and Critical Relevance, Is main stream media missing an important cultural trend". While there checked the "face off" paintings. "Face off" is 2 hour demo by the invited faculty for the conference in a hall where every 2 -3 artists are assigned a model. The paintings are then auctioned. I have attached the paintings. Enjoy.

Easter Lily

Spring beckons me. I love the spring flowers that are as shortlived as gorgeous. In the past I have escaped painting some of these flowers trying to fit them into my schedule. This year I am pursuing them with a vigor!!

Here is an easter lily. Though the finished image is 8 x 16 the scanner got only a portion of the painting.
And here is the painting in process.

I have to keep reminding myself that flowers are transient, they can't adapt to my schedule! I have to fit into their life schedule :-). Started the painting while there were 2 unopened buds and by the time I finished all of them had opened up. Having a warm light shining at them seems to just hasten the process of blooming too. Luckily, one thing I have learned from plein air is to finish what is expected to change first and then work on things that can last. Seems to work :-)

A slump period

Mid December to January was a tough month. I didn't want to paint. Yes , I'll say it loud and clear. I didn't want to paint or even think in terms of values, shapes, colors. Since I have started painting I have shifted my thought process to a painters. Everything I looked at I analysed, in terms of values, shapes, color. I have been painting atleast 5 days a week even though I have moved away from trying to complete a successful painting a day and posting on this blog. Painting whatever I wanted, testing new techniques, doing color charts, copying master painters I liked. I was also constantly applying what I learned in Scott Christensen's workshop I took (I'll do a seperate post on that) and it was thrilling, hard word and I woke up wanting to paint. Then in mid december something changed. I felt I had no energy left to paint even though I was inspired by places I visited. It seemed like my passion just died on me. I panicked. Why did I quit a steady job? In this economy, could I get back in where and when I wanted? Where was I headed? I called my brother who had switched careers from hardware engineering to directing movies. "It's OK. Nourish your soul" he advised. "Take a break from painting." I was however skeptical of his advice. If this is my passion why do I need a break? Was this a passing fancy, I wondered? Whenever artists I knew talked about nourishing their souls they have taken breaks or vacations to exotic places but painted all through that.

I went against all advice given my seasoned artists like Mary Whyte at the portrait society conference and took a break not knowing whether it was going to be a permanent one. A whole month of not painting and not even drawing. Not even thinking about it. I enjoyed cooking, dancing, talking to friends and watching TV!! Atlast the monthly cable fees were worth the payments now!! As I was doing these things I realized that I was still thinking of ideas to paint. They just seemed to flow naturally and I still enjoyed that immensely. However, I didn't feel the pressure to analyze how to put it in paint. I just enjoyed the thought and let it go.

Well, by Jan end I was itching to paint. I decided to attend the portrait painters session in Big Flats. My stomach was in knots. The first day of school effect but here is the result of my 2 hour stint!

I am so happy for taking the break. I realized my passion didn't die on me because I wake up wanting to paint. It just needed a break!! Somewhere along getting all technical and analytical, my mind had conquered my heart. I should remember to listen more to my heart when I paint!!

I participated in the first Emira downtown street festival which ran for 2 days and won third prize. Above is a picture washed out by the initial showers the 2nd day. It was my pastel painting in more than 20 years. It was fun. doing this art. I did an anamorphic art. The picture below is distorted but the actual reflection in the mirror reveals 3 veiled women. The first day was bright and sunny and it poured the next day. I wish I had taken a picture the first day :-(

I was travelling back from Maryland last week and got caught in a rainstorm. It was scary to drive but wonderful to watch. The clouds just passed right in front of us showering us with rain in batches. It was dark and I couldn't capture a picture. I have tried to compose this from my rather vivid memory.

However a few minutes into the pose he started to look very serious and grumpy. All traces of jovialness, was removed. I kept thinking "Never judge a book by it's cover" while I was painting this.

Last week was spring break for my kids. My bad mom guilt got the better of the bad artist guilt and I have been busy with the kids. I also drove my kids 5 hrs to grandmas. Spring was in full bloom. The drive was awesome but lasted 6.5 hrs because I had to stop and take pictures all the way through! This hill was on our way and reminded me of William Wordsworth's poem "The Daffodils". Neither near a lake nor really under trees but just as heavenly.

Also busy working on some large paintings. Hopefully I will be able to fit my small works in more frequently.

I am having a hard time photographing this. I can't get the color right if texture is and the texture right if the color is right. After 20 trials in different light conditions I had to settle for a compromise of both. Any suggestions to photograph will be appreciated. Today is a very low light day and that could be a problem too.

Today is a very special day for me. I am also an indian classical dance performer(kuchipudi). After more than a decade of absence I am performing again. It is all the more delightful because I am performing with my daughter. I know how much my mom loves dance and wanted to do the same but her wishes were never fulfilled. I am thankful to my parents for giving me all that they wanted and couldn't have. I don't have time to paint today and am posting a favorite portrait (if it can be called that) I did of Sri Raja Rajeswari Devi from Rush, NY a while ago. It is incomplete but I still wanted to post it. Will post completed one later. This temple is my favorite. You can walk upto the altar and touch the goddess and gods. The temple staff is very friendly and very supportive of every whim and fancy a devotee feels (like me wanting to paint in the temple :)
